Professor Tomas Albrektsson is a Swedish physician and researcher, internationally recognized as one of the founding figures of modern implant dentistry. He earned his MD in 1973 and PhD in 1979 at the University of Gothenburg, working closely with Per-Ingvar Brånemark on the early development of osseointegration. In 1986, he became Professor and Head of the Department of Biomaterials at Gothenburg, where he now serves as Professor Emeritus. Over his career, he has held visiting professorships at institutions including the Eastman Dental Institute in London and Malmö University. Albrektsson has authored hundreds of scientific papers, edited numerous books, and delivered thousands of lectures worldwide. His research on implant surfaces, biomaterials, and marginal bone stability has shaped global standards in implantology and earned him multiple international awards.
